Our mission

In 2013, we set out to empower billions of people across the world by upgrading them to a more open, efficient, and inclusive financial system. To do that, we built a platform that makes cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum easily accessible to everyone – whoever and wherever you are.

The way people use and think about money is constantly evolving.

The existing financial system was built for a non-digital age, ignoring the needs of the modern individual and with many unnecessary inefficiencies and gatekeepers. The world now has access to new technologies like decentralized cryptocurrencies that is quickly making these old systems and ways of thinking redundant. Like communication evolving from landlines to mobile phones, or post to email, money is now finally catching up with other information revolutions.

Marcus

Exec Chair & Co-Founder

Marcus previously worked for Standard Chartered in Singapore and before that 3i and Morgan Stanley in London. He holds an MBA from INSEAD, is a qualified Chartered Accountant and a CFA charterholder. He is a South African citizen and a Singapore Permanent Resident.

Chief Legal Officer

Lucy has practised as a lawyer in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Law and Science in New Zealand, followed by a Masters in Law from the University of Cambridge. Prior to starting at Luno in 2017, Lucy worked for the global law firm Allen & Overy.

VP Operations

Tony has experience in running large scale global Customer Success, Fraud, Governance, Payments, Engineering and Technology teams. He obtained a BBA from Newport University, and N.Dip (CDP) DUT. Previously Tony worked with Deloitte Consulting.

Alwyn
CFO

Alwyn joined Luno in 2021 from Monzo Bank, where he served as CFO since September 2018, overseeing finance and payments as well as serving on the UK and US boards. Alwyn graduated with an MBA from the London Business School and an MA from The University of Oxford.

Entrepreneur In Residence

Alex is a Google Developer Expert and focuses on Android development. He has co-founded or been involved in various start-ups where he has been instrumental in developing some of South Africa’s most successful apps.

James

James joined Luno in 2018 and was Chief Operating Officer before being promoted to Chief Executive Officer. James is a seasoned operator and has served in leadership roles across marketing, product, commercial and operations.
